Jan Thiel is one of the most popular neighborhoods on the sunny island of Curaçao. Located on the east coast of the island, this residential neighborhood offers not only beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters, but also an array of amenities that make it a great place to live. In Jan Thiel, you will find everything you need. There is a supermarket where you can buy groceries, as well as several stores. For sports and fitness enthusiasts, there are several gyms and yoga studios nearby. For other amenities, they are easily accessible by public transportation. Schools can be reached within 15 minutes by car.
The history of Jan Thiel is complex and varied, but it has developed into a place that attracts people from all over the world for entertainment and relaxation in beautiful surroundings. Jan Thiel was originally a salt plantation. The area around the salt lake is a nature reserve, but the remainder including the area around Jan Tiel Bay has been parceled out; in addition to private homes, there are hotels and apartments. Around 1700, the area was bought as Damasco salt plantation. The natural lagoon was dammed so that, after evaporation, salt could be extracted. In 1737, the plantation was purchased by Jozef Penso from Jan Thielen, and named after him. Besides salt, other products such as indigo were grown, and during the 20th century, oranges. Salt was extracted until 1975. In 1978 the plantation was bought by the General Pension Fund Netherlands Antilles (now: Stichting Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland). In 1992 the area was parceled out and sold, but the area around the salt lake remained undeveloped, and became nature reserve.
Salt Lake
The salt lake is free to visit and attracts many bird species including red flamingo‘s. A ten-kilometer trail has been built along the lake, and it is possible from Jan Thiel Bay to the Curaçao Sea Aquarium to walk. Along the lake are the ruins of overseer’s houses, a lime kiln, and a salt barn with cisterns. In 2008, the salt lake and surrounding area received monument status.
