The Curacao Climate
Curacao belongs along with Aruba and Bonaire to the three Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. Curaçao has a warm steppe climate (BSh according Köppen-Geiger). The steppe climate is characterized by fairly constant tropical temperatures.
During the day it’s between 28 and 34 degrees Celsius. The seawater temperature does not differ much from the air. Along the coast, the water is between 26-30 degrees.
Curaçao has rainfall in two seasons. In January to August, in principle it’s dry season. In the months of July and August can moreover be prevented rain. September is a transition month during which days are interspersed with several showers with days in which the wind to a large extent drops out so that it feels very hot and stuffy. From October / to January is the rainy season. That does not mean it rains for days, but that every now and then (sometimes violent) it can rain and then nature is beautifully dressed in different green colors.
The soil consists mainly of limestone and diabase. Water seeps away quickly. This makes it hard for plants to grow. Diabase, by weathering a high mineral content but lack of water such items may not be utilized sufficiently, diabase is however very fertile.
The vegetation of the island consists mainly of plants, shrubs and trees that are resistant to drought. The cactus is a familiar example.
Curaçao has an almost ever-present trade winds that blow over the island from the northeast. You see that especially along the rugged north coast.
